Richard’s most recent projects include:
Providing consultancy support to lead a jointly funded NHS Trust and CCG project. This included working with senior clinicians and their management teams to agree the opportunities and actions required for financial improvement in a variety of clinical services. This work was well received across the local health economy and was extended with the support of Vanguard funding and the agreement of the Trust Development Authority (TDA).
Chris Palmer, Director of Financial & Human Resources, Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:
“Richard is very professional in his approach and able to ensure that key concepts and issues are clearly conveyed to the Board. The project was carried out in collaboration with our own clinicians ensuring that the reviews were rich in detail and relevant to our specific challenges. We now have a far greater understanding of our issues, improved accuracy of information and a wealth of opportunities to take forwards in our continued pursuit of improved efficiency and development of our organisational strategy”
Loretta Outhwaite, Chief Finance Officer, Isle of Wight CCG, said:
"Richard supported the CCG and our local Trust to deliver a joint project for the local health economy. He has successfully worked across organisational boundaries, securing engagement and developing the knowledge that we require to make strategic decisions. The outputs from the work have been equally well received by our Board and our Clinical Executive and I am very happy to endorse his skill set and approach."
Consultancy support enabling Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust to implement improved financial information systems.
Ben Lloyd, Director of Finance & Deputy Chief Executive, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said:
“When we wanted some senior finance support to oversee the development and implementation of a Finance Dashboard and Service Line Reporting I was delighted that Richard was available. The project progressed swiftly keeping both to budget and to timescale. Significant clinical engagement was achieved with some excellent feedback from senior budget holders, consultants and Board members.”
Supporting University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust to review their Patient Level Information & Costing System and Service Line Reporting information, working with clinicians to understand the extent to which the varying levels of profitability are driven by inadequate remuneration under the national tariff, allocation/apportionment of costs and income and resource use.
Paul Goddard, Acting Director of Finance, University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, commented:
“Richard was brought in whilst I was acting Director of Finance to provide some additional senior support; specifically relating to Service Line Reporting. I was pleased with how he was able to integrate quickly and effectively with the existing team and the wider organisation.
He led a review of profitability of General Surgery and its sub specialties with one of our senior consultants. As a result of this review he was able to highlight changes that we could implement to improve financial performance at both operational and strategic level. We also now have a proven framework which we can use to investigate financial performance in other service lines/specialties.”
Covering the Deputy Director of Finance role at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust whilst a substantive appointment was made. This included a review and rewrite of the 2013/14 financial plan, introducing improved monthly reporting and integration of the cost improvement programme within Finance and recommending revisions to the structure of the finance function.
Ben Lloyd, Director of Finance & Deputy Chief Executive, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said:
“I was really pleased that Richard could provide support as Deputy Director of Finance, when I took on the FD/Deputy CEO position at Portsmouth Hospitals. I knew there were going to be significant challenges and that we would need to hit the ground running.
Within the first few weeks Richard carried out due diligence on the financial plan and budgets ensuring that realistic plans were signed off both internally and externally. The monthly financial reporting was also improved and a restructure of the department was set underway. During this critical period of change Richard provided key support and I can recommend him on the basis of his experience, technical competence and professionalism.”
Working as the interim Chief Finance Officer with NHS South Commissioning Support Unit during the establishment of the organisation. Responsibilities included preparing the financial elements of the integrated business plan (IBP) designing finance structures to meet the needs of external and internal customers and working with the executive team to develop and deliver commercial bids
